ICS LTD IN THE
NETHERLANDS
For over 15 years now I
have watched vast numbers of Irish Cobs leave Ireland
without any record of their breeding, or any recognition of
their breed and origin as Irish Cobs from Ireland.
This long time
trend has proven detrimental to the native Irish Cob breed
in Ireland.
By depleating the Irish
Cob breeding stocks in Ireland,
at a time when there was no Irish Cob stud
book in Ireland, it left the Irish Cob breed exposed and
vulnerable to being taken over
by organizations outside
of Ireland - also under different breed names.
(For this reason it
could be understood why the return of the ICS Ltd Irish Cob
Stud Book of the Origin of the Breed to Ireland, may not be
good news to every organization outside Ireland).
In 1996 I decided
that I would seek to set up a Stud Book (record) for the
Irish Cob breed in Ireland and to try to get as many of the
exported Irish Cobs registered in Ireland where they should
be.
In 1996 I wrote
the Irish Cob breed standard and had outline sketches made
of the Irish Cob breed for educational puposes (these
I still use to date for training potential Irish Cob
inspectors).
In 1996 I lodged an
application for approval to maintain an Irish Cob Stud Book
with
the Department of
Agriculture in Ireland.
Having had no
success on my own getting approval to maintain and Irish Cob
Stud Book,
I,
in 1998, asked a group of people I knew to
help me in my quest by joined me and
as a result, in
1998, The Irish Cob Society was established in
Ireland.
When in
1998 The Irish Cob Society was granted approval to
maintain
the Irish Cob Stud
Book - Stud Book of the origin of the breed,
it seemed like I
had finally managed to acheive what I had set out to do in
1996.
However, it
seemed like all was lost when in 2005 approval was withdrawn
from the ICS Ltd to
maintain the Irish Cob Stud Book of the Origin of the breed
and approval to
maintain the Irish Cob Stud Book of the Origin of the breed
subsequently granted to
an organization in Germany.
The time spent seeking
to get the Irish Cob Stud Book of the Origin of the Breed
back to Ireland and to the ICS Ltd has taken it's tole on
myself and on the other
ICS Ltd directors, to
whom is owed great credit and thanks for never giving up.
It gave me untold inner
joy to go to Holland last weekend and to know
that I had not been
forgotten and that I was still appreciated for my many
years
contribution and
dedication to the Irish Cob breed.
I appreciate all
those in Holland who brought their horses to me to inspect.
I must also give
credit and thanks to Dalia Jensen (ICS Ltd Grade 1
inspector)
who accompanied me last
weekend as the second ICS Ltd inspector in Holland.
Thank you Hanneke for
establishing the ICS Ltd affiliated organization in the
Netherlands.
